Whether you are looking for a unique gift, a break from the digital world, or the first step into a new hobby, this session is designed to give you a genuine taste of traditional and modern metalworking.
What You Will Experience
The Heat of the Forge: Learn how to safely and effectively manage the heat using our professional propane gas forge.
Hammer and Anvil: Get a feel for the tools of the trade. You will learn proper hammer techniques, how to move the metal, and the fundamental drawing and tapering skills every blacksmith needs.
Expert Guidance: Work closely with an experienced professional blacksmith. You will get step-by-step, hands-on instruction to ensure you are safe, learning the correct techniques, and having a great time.
Take Home Your Creation: You won't just be hitting metal for the sake of it. You will complete your very own hand-forged item—such as a traditional coat hook, a fire poker, or a bottle opener—to take home and use for a lifetime.
Session Details
Duration: 3 hours (Perfect for a morning or afternoon session) or Full Day (10am - 4pm)
No Experience Necessary: Designed completely for beginners. We provide all the steel, fuel, and tools.
Safety First: Safety Equipment
Safety Glasses: Essential for protecting against flying scale, sparks, and debris. Wraparound styles offer the best protection.
Leather Apron: Protects the participant's torso and upper legs from radiant heat, sparks, and accidental brushing against hot metal.
Ear Protection: Anvils can ring loudly, especially for beginners who might miss the hot steel and strike the anvil face directly. Foam earplugs or over-ear defenders are a must.
Leather Gloves: While many smiths prefer a bare hammer hand for better grip and blister prevention, heavy leather gloves are necessary for the hand holding the tongs or working near the heat source.
Clothing Requirements (Worn by the Participant)
Natural Fibres Only: All clothing must be made of 100% cotton, wool, or leather. No synthetics (like polyester, nylon, or activewear), as these materials will melt to the skin if hit by a hot spark.
Long Trousers: Heavy denim jeans or canvas work trousers are ideal. They should cover the top of the footwear so hot scale cannot drop into their boots. Avoid trousers with frayed hems or large cuffs that can catch sparks.
Long-Sleeved Shirt: A long-sleeved cotton shirt protects the arms from radiant heat and light sparks.
Sturdy Footwear: Leather work boots are strictly required. Steel-toe boots are highly recommended. Absolutely no open-toed shoes, sandals, crocs, or mesh trainers.
Hair and Accessories: Long hair must be securely tied back. Dangling jewellery, loose watches, and lanyards must be removed before entering the workshop.
Ready to strike while the iron is hot? Spaces are limited to ensure personalized instruction at the anvil.
